Four different MS teams are getting ready for the upcoming basketball season, and those in the middle school trying out are going to give it their best to get a chance to put on the jersey and represent their school.

Last year the seventh grade boys went 11-6, the eighth grade boys went 10-5, the seventh grade girls went 8-7, and the eighth grade girls went 11-7.

The seventh grade girls, eighth grade boys, and eighth grade girls tryouts will be on October 19, 23, and 24. The seventh grade boys will tryout on October 25, 26, and 27.

The coach for seventh grade boys is Pete Davenport, while the seventh grade girls coach is Carter Thomas. The eighth grade girls coach is Amanda Barksdale, while the eighth grade boys coach is Gary Jones.

“The first thing we look for is athleticism so we can teach them. We like our teams to be strong and physical when we play. You have to be a great teammate too. If you’re not a good teammate you probably will not have a spot,” said Coach Argall, girls varsity basketball coach.

“We are looking for whatever gifts they are given and to use them to the best of their abilities,” said Gary Jones, eighth grade boys basketball coach. The players have talents and the coaches are looking for those talents on the court.

“The MS teams have met the expectations of the varsity program. We’ve consistently developed talent and prepared them physically and mentally for Westminster basketball,” said Coach Jones. The basketball program in the middle school is really testing the players and making them dig deep and build as much strength as they can so that they can perform at their best.

“We have been very solid and we are fortunate to have two veteran coaches. We have success in the MS league and won many championships. Continuing to develop our younger guys is a big aspect which has led to more success to varsity,” said boys head varsity coach Tray Malloy.

“We try to grow a system to grow culture, learn, be good teammate, and love basketball,” said Coach Argall. The Westminster MS basketball teams definitely have the best team chemistry, the best teammates, and most skilled players out of all the teams.

To test the players in tryouts the coaches set up very challenging drills that will test the players and make them push themselves to the most that they can.

“We have standard drills and scrimmages we do to test the skills of individual players and being a great teammate in tryouts. We also test them to try to execute the Westminster basketball offense and defense,” said Coach Jones.

“Each coach gets to set their own tryouts up and they are looking for basic fundamentals. Leadership, dribbling, shooting, defense, etc,” said Coach Malloy.

The Westminster basketball program has always finished as one of the top five teams out of the other middle school basketball programs that they have played against. As the four MS teams are formed, Wildcat Nation hopes for more of the same winning ways.
